Kirtan is call-and-response form of chanting Sanskrit Mantras. When chanting these sacred Mantras, we call out to the Divine. Mantra is a Sanskrit word composed of two sounds; Man, meaning mind, and Tra meaning to cross over or protect. Kirtan means, to speak, or to mention. The world is sound, and all that is manifest proceeds from sound and continues to pulsate as sound vibration. The musical instrument that accompanies Kirtan is the Harmonium, a reed instrument, akin to a pump organ or an accordion. It's a traditional instrument used in Kirtans in India, and now all over the world. Percussion is also used.
There are no hard and fast rules for chanting. You don't have to be a professional singer either. If it moves you, then chant, or just listen. Our goal is to create a loving and peaceful space, to share the gift of chanting.
Namaste.
