Andrea Martin, MSW is delighted to partner with The Yoga Loft Marblehead to lead a 3 part virtual teaching series, An Introduction to a Social Justice Practice.  The series is designed to go through the basic concepts of systemic oppression/racism and provide opportunities for participants to dive deeper into their own identities and reflect on how they interact in the world, particularly across differences.  Social Justice and Racial Equity are incredibly complex topics, so while this series will not be able to touch on everything, we will explore ways that individuals can make small but mighty mindset and behavior shifts. The goal is that as participants begin developing a personal social justice and racial equity lens it will have a ripple effect across their personal and professional landscapes bringing a greater sense of self-awareness, a greater understanding of different lived experiences, and ultimately a deeper connection to humanity.

Each of the sessions are strategically designed to support participants, with love and grace, in gaining new information, developing the skills to engage in difficult conversations, and practice shifting from new awareness and analysis to ways of taking actions  in real world situations.

The virtual sessions schedule and themes are as follows:

  • October 21: Introduction to the Systems of Oppression - Participants will learn about the systems of oppression and how they have been socialized or impacted by those systems.

  • November 18: Exploring Identity Development - Participants will explore their oppressed and privileged identities and how that impacts how they see/understand/move in the world.

  • December 9: Shifting from Unconscious Bias - Participants will leverage their learning from the first two sessions to identify ways to be aware and mitigate their biases as they move through the world.

Participant Commitments:

Participants who agree to engage in these sessions will bring with them a willingness to":

  • Keep an open mindset

  • Be willing to sit with and move through discomfort

  • Explore and even implicate themselves within the systems of oppression

  • Willing to share their thoughts and experiences in small and large group settings

  • Take a pre and post survey

  • Do prework assignments before any sessions and homework assignments between the sessions

About Your Leader:

Andrea Martin received her Master’s in Social Work with a focus on systemic change, community development, critical race theory and disrupting privilege from the University of Denver in 2015.  She has dedicated her academic and professional career to studying social justice, racial equity and systemic oppression and her most recent role with DEEP (Disruptive Equity Education Project) took her into organizations, nonprofits and schools/districts, to uncover their unconscious bias and implement strategies to foster greater inclusion, belonging and equity. Before that Andrea was a manager at a nonprofit focused on providing programs to increase sustainability (food, clothing, rent assistance, and other access to resources) for the most vulnerable populations of Jefferson and Denver counties in Colorado and during that time also became a Mental Health First Aid Trainer. Andrea ended her time with DEEP in April and has become an activist entrepreneur working in collaboration with others on multiple projects promoting racial justice and simultaneously establishing a company designed around equitable mental health access for kids.
