The Yoga Loft Storybook: Nancy Spelbrink
Why/When/Where did you start practicing yoga?
One of my first yoga classes was when Baron Baptiste opened his Cambridge studio back in 2000. It was quite an experience! I went back for more and when a studio opened in my neighborhood in Brookline Village, I became a regular. Twenty years later, I don't seek that type of yoga anymore but I sure appreciate that it has gotten me to be an avid yogi!
How has yoga changed/influenced your life?
Yoga has helped me stay free of any major aches and pains - I've never been to a chiropractor. It has helped me stay at the same weight for the past 20 years and it has given me the opportunity go to a like-minded community and be on the mat for me, myself and I while being inspired and encouraged by such great instructors.
What has been your experience practicing at The Yoga Loft?
I found the Yoga Loft when I moved from Brookline to Swampscott in 2016. It has been 'my practicing studio' ever since my first class. The incredible instructors, the variety of classes, the vibe of the studio, the friendly staff have me coming back day after day.
I have begun doing some of the virtual classes and although it's a different experience, like all things now, we just have to readjust and appreciate what is being offered.
Anything else you wish to share about your yoga journey?
Since social distancing, I have taken some of my creative skills and put them to work! My mom is an exceptional interior designer, and I spent my childhood decorating doll houses with her wallpapers, fabrics and upholstery and learning how to use a sewing machine. I have a huge collection of her stunning fabrics and decided to put them to good use and I'm now making masks for friends and family that need one. Now, a few weeks later and over 60 masks distributed coast-to-coast, I continue to make and send a FREE mask for anyone in need. My mother is turning 93 tomorrow (4/25) and she still has clients. I guess this is my way of honoring my mother's legacy and helping others in this time of need.
Stay safe, stay well - Namaste!
