Why/when/where did you start practicing yoga?

I used to drive by a little studio in Wellesley every day on my way to and from work.  I remember seeing (mostly) women filing up the stairs, mat under elbow, water bottle in the other hand looking happy and vibrant.  Every day, I just drove on by.

I had moved out of the city.  I had tons of privacy but no friends.  Life became a cycle of work, dinner, tv, bed.  I gained lots of weight, had no energy and felt a little lost.  My clothes weren’t fitting and my self-esteem was plummeting.  One day I decided to stop at the studio and see what yoga was all about.  I went to open the door but it was locked.  I returned to my car and cried my heart out.  I felt like I finally took a step to make a change and the universe just laughed at me.

Little did I know, that’s how studios work…they’re closed when class isn’t in session.  I checked the schedule on-line and went back that same night at 5pm.  Upon check in, the teacher told me she’s new and I may be the only one in class.  She was right.  I spent the next hour learning the basics.  I couldn’t do most of the practice.  Every pose was modified, lots of rest & water, frustration, emotion, sweat.

And I couldn’t wait to come back the next day.  That was about 15 years ago.

How has yoga changed or influenced your life?

Since then, yoga has been at my center.   Almost an addiction!  I love any and everything yoga related.  I completed my 200hour certification in 2009, I have practiced in just about every studio & style in Boston, south shore, north shore, metro west & Cape Cod.  I’ve participated in Yoga Reaches Out three times, traveled to different countries for yoga retreats and have studied the practice off the mat, too.

The benefits of a daily practice have changed my life.  As I got stronger, I got more peaceful.  I feel grounding, renewal and filled with gratitude every time I get on my mat.  Every day is different and every day yoga meets me where I am.  I’m blessed to be a part of The Yoga Loft community and to learn from the most loving and committed teachers.

What keeps you busy outside of the studio?

I practice acupuncture which is a natural compliment to yoga.  Essentially both practices move energy, break up stagnation and free space within you to fill with more love, breath, ease and joy.

I love walking my dog Sailor and I can’t wait to travel again.
