The Yoga Loft Storybook: Hannah Irving
Why/When/Where did you start practicing yoga?
My experience with yoga has certainly been a journey! I started practicing in my early 20s, purely for the sake of exercise. Despite my lack of experience and knowledge, I was still resistant to feedback, and largely unwilling to ask for help. (I have heard teachers say that our time on the mat mirrors our lives outside the studio. Unfortunately, I have to admit that this was true during that time in my life!) In spite of myself, my practice grew and continues to grow. The more time I spend on the mat, the more I learn, and the more open I am to the instruction and adjustments offered to me.
How has yoga changed/influenced your life?
As my practice has grown, I have begun to realize how encompassing yoga is. What once started as an exclusively physical practice, I now believe to be a mental and spiritual practice as well. My yoga practice - most notably the ability to slow down and breathe through any situation - has translated to, and positively impacted many areas of my life.
What has been your experience practicing at The Yoga Loft?
I seek yoga out everywhere I go! I have had the opportunity to practice in studios throughout the country while traveling, and attended the World Yoga Festival outside of London in 2016. Yet, nothing makes me happier than an hour (or two!) at The Yoga Loft. It's hard to put into words the peace at which I feel when I'm there. The atmosphere created by the studio itself, the staff (both teaching and managerial), and the yogis themselves, can turn around even my grumpiest mornings!
Anything else you wish to share about your yoga journey?
As is the case with most things in my life, I forget to appreciate what yoga has done and continues to do for me. I'm grateful for the opportunity to reflect on my yoga-life, and hope that I continue to practice for many decades to come!
